You don’t have to walk very far to find a good hiking trail around here. The Lakes Region has plenty of trails that lead to immaculate views, all without requiring day-long commitments.
- Mount Major: A local favorite, this trail is short but steep, and shows a view of Lake Winnipesaukee from the summit that is unbelievable.
- West Rattlesnake Mountain: One of the best bang-for-your-buck hikes in the area, it’s located just outside of the city of Holderness, with a great overlook of Squam Lake.
- Red Hill: Giving you a steady climb, great views, and even a fire tower at the top, this trail is a must-see during your stay in New Hampshire.
Up for something bigger? The White Mountains are just up the road. This beautiful mountain range provides several trails, such as the Franconia Ridge and Mount Moosilauke. Experience a whole different kind of hiking when you venture into the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Right along the edge of Squam Lake is the small and charming town of Holderness. It’s home to the lake's Natural Science Center, which is worth checking out if you’re traveling with kids. It’s also a great starting point for exploring the lake by boat or on foot. Several trailheads and kayak rentals are just minutes from town, making it the ideal base.
