Picture this: waking up in the morning to a gorgeous hike up a mountain trail, followed by spending the afternoon on the water, and ending the day with a quiet cast into a lake. Sound like your type of thing?

Welcome to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire—where outdoor adventures are always close, and the views never disappoint. Whether you’re into fishing, hiking, boating, or just getting outside, our area has plenty to offer. And with the White Mountains just a short drive away, it’s easy to turn this weekend getaway into a full-on adventure.

There is a small island in the middle of the lake.

At the heart of the area is Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in all of New Hampshire, and a favorite for all visitors alike. Dozens of islands, wide open stretches, and quiet coves make this lake ideal for all water activities, from pontoon cruising to early morning kayaking.

That isn’t the only option, as the region also includes several other bodies of water, such as Squam Lake, Newfound Lake, and Lake Winnisquam. Each brings something different to the table, such as Squam Lake being ideal for a more peaceful retreat, with peaceful waters and fewer boats than the other lakes. It is perfect for paddling or rowing.

However, if you’re a speed chaser or planning to waterski, head on over to Winnisquam or Winnipesaukee, which’ll give you more room to move. Wanting to hit the open waters without the hassle of navigating? Hop on a local cruise, such as the M/S Mount Washington, and take in the views, all without lifting a finger.

Boating the Lakes Region

Nothing finishes a day out better than casting a line with your friends and trying to catch the next prize fish. Lakes Region, NH delivers on all punches, with several prime fishing spots. Whether you prefer fly fishing from the shore or heading out on a boat, there’s a lake (or ten) waiting for you.

  • Newfound Lake: Known for its clear, cold waters, this lake is excellent for catching trout.
  • Lake Winnipesaukee: Catch a variety of fish within these waters, ranging from smallmouth bass to rainbow trout.
  • Squam Lake: If you’re looking for a low-key spot to fly fish, look no further than Squam Lake.

Public access points can be found in a variety of locations, with boat launches in several lakes, making it perfect for you to bring your own setup.

Hikes with a View

You don’t have to walk very far to find a good hiking trail around here. The Lakes Region has plenty of trails that lead to immaculate views, all without requiring day-long commitments.

  • Mount Major: A local favorite, this trail is short but steep, and shows a view of Lake Winnipesaukee from the summit that is unbelievable.
  • West Rattlesnake Mountain: One of the best bang-for-your-buck hikes in the area, it’s located just outside of the city of Holderness, with a great overlook of Squam Lake.
  • Red Hill: Giving you a steady climb, great views, and even a fire tower at the top, this trail is a must-see during your stay in New Hampshire.

Up for something bigger? The White Mountains are just up the road. This beautiful mountain range provides several trails, such as the Franconia Ridge and Mount Moosilauke. Experience a whole different kind of hiking when you venture into the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Right along the edge of Squam Lake is the small and charming town of Holderness. It’s home to the lake's Natural Science Center, which is worth checking out if you’re traveling with kids. It’s also a great starting point for exploring the lake by boat or on foot. Several trailheads and kayak rentals are just minutes from town, making it the ideal base. While you’re here, come say hi to us over at the Cottage Place on Squam Lake, with cozy cabins, spacious sites, and private lake houses just waiting to be explored.
